What Gas Fireplace Service Actually Covers
A gas fireplace has more moving parts than most homeowners realize — and most of them are invisible behind the glass or buried in the control system. Annual service is how you catch problems before they become breakdowns, and how you stay ahead of safety issues like carbon monoxide and gas leaks.
Our licensed WA gas technicians inspect and service the complete system: pilot assembly, ignition, thermocouple and thermopile, gas valve, burner ports, logs and media, venting termination, and the electrical controls. We test CO levels and check for gas leaks on every visit.
We service all major brands — Napoleon, Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Superior, Travis Industries, Valor, and Montigo — and carry common parts on every vehicle to resolve most issues in a single visit.

“Hired Genesis for dryer vent cleaning after a friend's recommendation. The tech was on time, explained exactly what he found (a pretty serious lint clog), and had it cleaned in 45 minutes. House smells better and I feel a lot safer. Five stars without hesitation.”

“I found Genesis through Angi and could not be happier. They came out the next day for a chimney inspection before we started using our fireplace for the season. Technician was thorough, honest, and didn't try to upsell anything unnecessary. Will be booking them every year.”

“Amazing work from Genesis! They came in and worked with my vision to convert one of our fireplaces to gas log and retrofit the other with a gas fire starter. Not only did they take the time to understand exactly what I wanted and make a clear plan, but they even got up on the roof and found a few other critical issues that needed fixing. They handled a long list of items, coordinating and negotiating with other vendors to get everything done quickly and done right — from roof and chimney work to running new gas lines to sweeping. The end result was a custom solution that fit our home perfectly and looks incredible. I can't say enough about the quality of their work, timeliness, and professionalism. Highly recommend!”

“I couldn't be happier with Genesis Home Services! David, our technician, was nothing short of amazing. He arrived promptly and immediately zeroed in on the issue. His commitment to getting the job done quickly and efficiently was impressive, but what really stood out was his kindness and professionalism throughout the entire process. David's ability to provide a swift diagnosis went above and beyond my expectations. It's rare to find a service that's both fast and thorough, and Genesis Home Services nailed it. Highly recommend Genesis Home Services to anyone in need.”

Common Gas Fireplace Problems We Fix
Most gas fireplace failures fall into a handful of categories. Here's what we see most often in Seattle-area homes.
Pilot light won't stay lit
The thermocouple or thermopile has worn out and is no longer generating enough millivoltage to hold the gas valve open. Straightforward replacement — typically resolved in a single visit.
Ignition clicking but no flame
Electronic ignition modules fail over time, especially after long periods of non-use. Could also be a spark gap issue or a clogged pilot orifice. We diagnose before replacing parts.
Fireplace won't respond to wall switch or remote
Wall switch wiring, receiver modules, and remote batteries/frequencies are common failure points. In older systems, the receiver board itself may need replacement.
Soot on the glass or logs
Soot buildup on a gas fireplace usually indicates incomplete combustion — a clogged burner port, improper log placement, or a venting issue. It's a symptom worth diagnosing, not just cleaning off.
Unusual smell when burning
A faint gas smell is always worth investigating immediately. Burning smells (not gas) are often dust on the burner after a period of non-use — which burns off. Any persistent or strong smell should be diagnosed by a licensed technician.
Fireplace runs but produces little heat
A blower motor failure is the most common cause. The burner may be operating correctly but the fan that circulates warm air isn't running — or is running at reduced speed due to a worn motor.
Seattle & Puget Sound Context
Why Gas Fireplace Service Matters More in the Pacific Northwest
Seattle's rainy season typically runs October through April — which is exactly when homeowners fire up their gas fireplaces after months of non-use. A fireplace that sat dormant through a humid summer is more likely to have corroded ignition components, clogged pilot orifices, or moisture in the venting system. Pre-season service before the first cold week is the right approach.
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issues periodic burn bans that restrict wood-burning fireplaces during high-pollution weather events. Gas fireplaces are exempt from these restrictions — making a properly maintained gas unit more reliable for heating during winter burn ban periods.
Modern energy-efficient Seattle homes are also more tightly sealed than homes built before the 1990s. Tighter construction means less natural air exchange — which makes proper venting and combustion air even more critical for gas appliances.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless — you cannot detect it without a monitor. Gas fireplaces produce CO as a byproduct of combustion. A properly vented and serviced fireplace vents these gases safely to the exterior.
Problems occur when venting is obstructed, the combustion air supply is inadequate, or the unit is operating outside its designed parameters. We test CO levels on every service visit.
If you smell gas or suspect a CO issue, leave the home immediately and call 911. Do not use the fireplace until it has been inspected and cleared by a licensed technician.
