Seattle Chimneys Have Their Own Set of Problems
Seattle's Craftsmans, Tudors, and mid-century homes were built in a different era — and most haven't been professionally serviced in years. PNW softwoods like Douglas fir and cedar produce far more creosote than hardwoods, and the region's persistent moisture speeds up flue deterioration. We sweep these systems daily, from original clay tile liners in 1920s Ballard bungalows to gas inserts in Capitol Hill walk-ups.
Common Chimney Problems We Find in Seattle
Patterns we see most often in Seattle homes — old and new
Stage 2 & Stage 3 creosote
Douglas fir, alder, and cedar burn with high moisture content and leave behind thick, glazed creosote deposits — the most dangerous kind. We remove all three stages with rotary cleaning systems.
Draft reversal & smoke backdraft
Older Seattle homes — especially Craftsmans with tall ceilings and low-clearance rooftops — often suffer from downdraft issues where cold air flows down the flue instead of smoke going up.
Musty & smoky odors in summer
Creosote residue in an uncleaned flue reacts with Seattle's summer humidity and produces a distinct smoky smell through the firebox. The fix is a thorough sweep, not air freshener.
Bird and animal nesting
Starlings, squirrels, and raccoons regularly enter uncapped chimneys in Ballard, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge. Nesting material blocks airflow and is a fire hazard.
Clay tile liner cracking
Original clay tile liners in homes built before 1960 deteriorate from decades of expansion and contraction. Cracks compromise fire containment — we note any damage in our written report.
Blocked or rusted chimney caps
Missing or corroded caps are one of the most common findings in Seattle. They allow moisture, debris, and animals into the flue — and are inexpensive to replace during the same visit.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Sweep
We work around your schedule and protect your home start to finish
01
Arrival & Setup
We arrive in the confirmed window, introduce ourselves, and lay heavy-duty drop cloths in front of the fireplace and on the path from the door. The HEPA vacuum goes on before the firebox opens.
02
Brush & Vacuum Clean
We run rotary brushes through the full flue — from the firebox up through the smoke chamber and flue to the cap. Soot and creosote are captured by the vacuum. Nothing escapes into the room.
03
Inspection While We Work
While cleaning, we check the damper, firebox walls, smoke shelf, visible liner sections, and crown. We photograph anything that needs attention.
04
Walkthrough & Report
Before we leave, we walk you through what we found — including any areas that may need follow-up. You get a written condition summary and a clear next step if anything needs repair.
